According to a recent analysis from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as many as 1 in 3 U.S. adults could have diabetes by 2050 if current trends continue. In addition, based on analysis of claims data conducted by the Health Care Cost Institute (HCCI), as of 2013, the annual per capita cost of treating someone with diabetes was $14,999, compared to $4,305 for individuals without diabetes. Given the alarming statistics and trends, managing diabetes is an integral part of population management for health plans and providers.
