Resource Overview

HIE will eventually be prevalent throughout the country. The ability of a primary care provider to have access to health information collected in other settings will certainly lead to better medical decision making and less unnecessary care. However, progress in HIE varies widely by state and locality, so these beneficial impacts must be weighed against a HIE’s ability to deliver them in the short run. Health centers can contribute to HIE’s expansion by joining them, but also must consider timing and short-term return on investment.
