What is Robotic Process Automation (RPA)?

A HITEQ Explainer, Published October 2021

Robotic Process Automation (RPA), also known as digital process automation, involves software performing repetitive computer-based tasks automatically. Automated programs or ‘bots’ are programmed to replicate processes based on explicit sets of instructions and rules established by the programmer. RPAs emulate human tasks and can interact with other bots and software. Bots can log into applications, move files, complete forms, store data, and much more.

Tasks that are well suited for RPA are manual, rule-based, not frequently changed, occur in high volume, and involve digital data. Processes that involve looking for a discrete piece of information in one location and then copying it or moving it into another location are a prime example in health centers.
