Interoperability for Combating the Opioid Epidemic: Lessons Learned From PDMPs

Interoperability for Combating the Opioid Epidemic: Lessons Learned From PDMPs

Office of National Coordinator for Health Information Technology Publication from 2018

This slide deck from ONC's 2018 Annual Conference outlines experiences and lessons learned from efforts to connect state-level Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) to health IT, including EHRs and HIEs. Specifically, the challenges enumerated included:

  • Some states use proprietary products to access PDMP data (Currently, there is no widely adopted standard).
  • Fragmented stakeholders require implementation guidance to accommodate multiple policies and scenarios.
  • State PDMPs are stand-alone and don’t readily share/may be prohibited from sharing with other states (unless agreements are in place).

Slides toward the end of the deck share a number of lessons learned. Click through the link below to see more.
